Exam target
The exam ÖSD Zertifikat B1 / Jugendliche certifies the candidate’s ability of independent language use in everyday life and school situations dealing with familiar topics and personal interests.
This exam is directed at learners aged 12 and over.
The exam comprises four modules (Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking). These modules can be sat and certified individually or taken in combination with one another.
The exam Zertifikat B1 / Jugendliche is a joint product in cooperation with the Goethe-Institute in Germany and the Center for Language Learning and Research at the University of Fribourg in Switzerland. Both, ÖSD and Goethe-Institute offer the exam worldwide.
Exam modules
Module: Written exam
Reading Module
The overall, selective and detailed comprehension of different authentic text (blog entries, newspaper articles, advertisements, commentaries and written instructions) from Austria, Germany and Switzerland is assessed in five different tasks.
Duration: 65 minutes
Listening Module
Global and detailed comprehension of listening text (announcements, short lectures, informal conversations and radio talk shows) in the standard language as spoken in Austria, Germany and Switzerland is assessed in four tasks.
Duration: approx. 40 minutes
Writing Module
Candidates have to write an informal email, a personal comment expressing their opinion and a short formal apology, each text observing particular requirements. Each text is assessed according to predetermined criteria.
Duration: 60 minutes
Module: Oral exam
Speaking Module
The oral exam is by default taken in pairs (alone only in exceptional cases) and consists of different tasks: planning an activity, briefly presenting a familiar given topic, giving feedback on the other candidate’s presentation and asking a question related thereto. The oral exam is assessed according to predetermined criteria.
Duration: approx. 15 minutes
Exam administration
The exam ÖSD Zertifikat B1 / Jugendliche consists of four modules (Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking). These modules can be sat and certified individually or taken in combination with one another. Candidates who have taken and passed one or more modules, will receive a single copy of a certificate for each module taken. If all four modules were successfully completed within a year, at the same exam centre, candidates will be entitled to receive a single copy of a full certificate listing all completed modules.
The exam will be carried out by two licensed ÖSD examiners who subsequently mark the candidate’s performance (see score form). By request, an inspection of the answer and rating sheet is possible. Here you can find the Exam Guidelines and the Terms and Conditions for Exam Administration.
